Diverticular Disease

Diverticular disease, where “pockets” form in the bowel wall properly known as diverticular” is incredibly common but most people are unaware they have a problem.

Thought to be caused by eating a low fibre diet these diversions in the bowel wall are permanent and not a problem unless they become inflamed. Problems start when food get caught in the pocket and stays there rather than passing through the bowel normally. The decomposing food then starts to aggravate the bowel wall, when this becomes acute it is known as Diverticulitis.

Sufferers are often told to eat “plenty of fibre” but find when they do they feel worse. This is often because they eat bran or other harsh grain fibre which is like using a scrubbing brush on sunburn! Ouch!

Food intolerances, stress and poor diet choices (that may look healthy) all contribute to aggravating symptoms which can respond well to good nutritional therapy and colon management techiniques.
