Thought field therapy information for healthcare professionals!Thought Field Therapy (TFT) is an innovative and rapidly effective form of psychotherapy already in use in a number of NHS Trusts and officially recognised by the NHS Trust Association as a complementary therapy. In a typical treatment, acupuncture meridian points are tapped with fingers in a precise sequence whilst the individual focuses their thoughts on their emotional problem. Most patients notice an immediate and dramatic improvement in the way they feel following its application. The exact mechanism of how it works remains unknown but finger tapping of meridian points on the body appears to break the connection between triggering thoughts/perceptions and the distressing emotional response. Following treatment, patients may still experience the same emotion but it will only be in appropriate situations. TFT has undergone significant clinical trials, sometimes in the most challenging situations. In October 2001, Dr Shkelzen Syla, the Chief Medical Officer in Kosovo, officially adopted TFT as the treatment of choice for those with post traumatic stress disorder in the region. This followed a 100% success rate in severe patients with PTSD being treated with TFT. TFT does not work for everyone nor on every problem. Research indicates that in excess of 75% of patients undergoing TFT can expect to obtain the enduring resolution they seek. Thought Field Therapy is most commonly used to treat and deal with phobias, such as fear of flying, fear of dentists and fear of heights. It can be used to treat addictions, including smoking, as well as anxieties over relationships problems, illnesses, redundancy, work-related stress and panic attacks. As a non-invasive, non-talking therapy treatment, TFT is ideally suited for post traumatic stress disorders relating to bereavements, road traffic accidents and illness diagnosis.
